Diwali gift for clients: ideas by budget, and what to avoid

The best Diwali gift for a client is something useful or consumable, tastefully packed, modest enough to be comfortable to accept, and delivered before Diwali on Sunday 8 November 2026. A good dry fruit and sweets box, a quality diary or a small hamper works for most clients. Expect to spend roughly ₹500 to ₹1,500 for regular clients and ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 for your top accounts.

The harder question is what to avoid. Cash, alcohol, very expensive items and anything that could look like an inducement cause more trouble than an ordinary box of sweets ever will. This guide covers ideas by budget, how to match the gift to the client, bulk-ordering tips, the tax points to raise with your accountant, and how to write the card.

What are good Diwali gifts for clients, and what should you spend?

Pick a tier based on how much the relationship is worth to you and how well you know the person. The bands below are planning guides, not prices. Check the current price of anything you plan to order.

Budget per clientTypical gift typeWho it suits
₹300 to ₹700Sweets or dry fruit box, diya set, festive cardSmall clients, prospects, vendors, suppliers
₹700 to ₹1,500Larger dry fruit or chocolate box, scented candles, a good diary and penRegular clients
₹1,500 to ₹3,000A curated hamper, tea or coffee set, a premium bottle or flaskClients who send you steady work
₹3,000 to ₹5,000Personalised gift, a quality home item, an artisan or handcrafted pieceYour top few accounts, long-standing partners

Our stance: smaller and thoughtful beats big and showy. A client who receives a lavish gift may feel uncomfortable, or may have to report it under their company policy. A box of good sweets with a handwritten line is almost never a problem.

How do you match the gift to the type of client?

Think about who the person is and what their company allows. The same gift does not suit a founder, a procurement manager and a government officer.

  • Owner-run businesses and founders. A personal, slightly warmer gift lands well here. A good dry fruit box or a handcrafted item with a note about how long you have worked together is enough.
  • Corporate clients. Many large companies and banks have gift and hospitality policies with value caps and disclosure rules. Keep it small and ship it to the office, not their home, so nothing is hidden.
  • New clients and prospects. Light touch. A diya set or a sweets box with a card is a greeting, not a pitch. Do not attach a proposal or a price list to a gift.
  • Vendors and suppliers. Gifts to the people who supply you are often forgotten. A thank-you box to the team that has been reliable all year earns goodwill that no discount can buy.
  • Government departments, PSUs and officials. Do not send gifts unless you have checked the rules. India's Central Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1964, in Rule 13, say a government servant should not accept gifts, with defined exceptions for family and personal friends who have no official dealings with them. If you do business with a public body, a greeting card is the safe choice.

What are the best Diwali gifts to buy for clients?

These are the gift types that suit most clients. We have not listed prices because they change often and differ between sellers, so pick your per-client band from the table above, then check the current price on the listing.

What should you avoid giving clients at Diwali?

Avoid anything that could look like payment for business, anything the recipient cannot accept and anything that ignores their beliefs. Here is the short list.

  • Cash or cash-like items. Envelopes of cash or high-value vouchers for a client can look like a bribe, and many companies prohibit them outright.
  • Expensive electronics or jewellery. Not only is it awkward, it may breach the client's policy.
  • Alcohol. Many clients do not drink or do not want it at home or office, and some firms ban it as a gift.
  • Leather goods. Some Hindu and Jain recipients avoid leather, so it is a risk when you do not know the person well.
  • Sharp objects. Knives and scissors are avoided as gifts by many families because they are said to symbolise cutting ties.
  • Heavy branding. A huge logo on the gift turns it into an advertisement. A small logo on the card or base is plenty.
  • Gifts timed to a decision. If your client is about to sign or renew a contract, send the gift after, or do not send it. Timing matters as much as value.

Public officials deserve a special mention. If your business deals with government departments, speak to your legal adviser about your gift policy before Diwali, not after.

How do you order client gifts in bulk and make them look personal?

Order early, test one, personalise the card and not the gift, and plan delivery so that every parcel arrives before Diwali. Most of the work is logistics.

  1. Build a recipient list. Name, designation, company, address, whether they are vegetarian and the gift tier. A shared spreadsheet is enough.
  2. Order one sample. Open it. Check the contents, the packing and whether the product matches the listing.
  3. Use a business account for GST invoices. If you are GST-registered, Amazon Business says it offers GST invoices on eligible purchases and quantity discounts from two units of the same item. Terms change, so check them on the page.
  4. Write each card by hand, or at least sign it. One line that mentions something specific (a project you finished, a milestone) does more than a printed greeting.
  5. Ship early. Courier volumes are high in the weeks before Diwali. Aim for delivery before Dhanteras on Friday 6 November rather than on Diwali day itself.
  6. Follow up lightly. A short message the day after delivery, "Hope the box reached you safely", is enough. Do not ask for anything.

Are Diwali gifts for clients tax-deductible, and what about GST?

This is a question for your accountant, because the answer depends on the gift, your business and how you record it. We can tell you what to ask, not what to claim.

On GST, section 17(5)(h) of the CGST Act is commonly read as blocking input tax credit on goods given away as gifts or free samples. Some professionals argue that promotional items such as diaries and pens used for brand promotion fall outside the clause, but that is a contested view, not settled law. Do not claim input tax credit on client gifts without checking.

On income tax, gifts to clients are generally claimed as business expenditure under section 37 of the Income-tax Act, 1961. That section allows expenditure incurred wholly and exclusively for the business, and it does not allow anything personal in nature. The Income-tax Act, 2025 has replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026 with new section numbers, so ask your accountant which section applies.

Separately, benefits or perquisites you give to business associates can attract TDS under section 194R (now carried into the new Income Tax Act 2025 numbering). The rate is 10 percent, and it applies when the total value you give one recipient in a financial year goes above ₹20,000.

That counts everything you give them, not only the Diwali box, so a ₹1,500 hamper will not reach it alone, but a top account who also gets trips or hospitality from you might. Under the older section, individuals and HUFs below set turnover limits did not have to deduct it. Ask your CA whether it applies to you.

Whatever your accountant says, keep records: an invoice, a list of recipients and the business reason. Gifts without a paper trail are hard to defend. If you also give gifts to your own team, the rules are different, and we cover them in our guide to Diwali gift ideas for employees.

What should you write on the Diwali card for a client?

Keep it short, warm and free of sales language. Two or three lines are plenty. A few templates you can adapt:

  • "Wishing you and your family a bright and happy Diwali. Thank you for a year of working together."
  • "Happy Diwali from all of us. We are grateful for your trust this year, and we look forward to next."
  • For a new client: "Happy Diwali. It has been a pleasure starting work with you, and we hope the year ahead is a good one."

Use the client's name, sign it yourself and keep the date and Diwali greeting generic enough for people of all faiths, particularly if you are unsure how they celebrate.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on a Diwali gift for a client?

Most small businesses spend ₹500 to ₹1,500 for regular clients and up to ₹5,000 for key accounts. Check each client's company gift policy first, as some set a limit.

Is it okay to give a client cash or a gift voucher at Diwali?

We would avoid cash. It can look like an inducement and may be refused by the client's company. A physical gift is safer.

When should client gifts be delivered?

Before Dhanteras on 6 November 2026 if you can, or at least a few days before Diwali on 8 November. Check your local panchang, as dates vary by region.

Can I send Diwali gifts to government officials?

Be very careful. Central government servants are generally barred from accepting gifts from people they deal with officially. Send a greeting card unless your legal adviser confirms otherwise.

Can I claim GST input tax credit on client gifts?

Section 17(5)(h) is commonly read as blocking credit on goods given as gifts, though some argue promotional items are different. Ask your accountant before you claim.

Your next step is to list your top ten clients, assign each one a budget tier and order a single sample this week. For more gifting ideas, see our guides to Diwali gifts for employees, Diwali gifts under ₹500 and the Diwali 2026 five-day calendar.
