Bhai Dooj gifts to India from abroad: ship-by dates and ideas

Bhai Dooj 2026 is Wednesday 11 November in India, but Drik Panchang's city pages list Tuesday 10 November for New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, London and Dubai, and Wednesday 11 November for Singapore and Sydney. The easiest way to send a gift to a brother in India is to order it from an Indian store for local delivery.

A parcel posted from abroad is treated as a gift that is prohibited unless full duty is paid, and that duty depends on the route and the declared value (the Mumbai postal FAQ gives 30.98 percent).

Some calendars say 10 November even for India, because Dwitiya begins on the afternoon of 10 November and ends on the afternoon of 11 November. If you and your brother live in different countries, you may genuinely have different dates. We checked every source below on 12 October 2026.

When is Bhai Dooj 2026 where you live?

Drik Panchang describes the day this way: sisters apply tilak to their brothers' foreheads and pray for their long lives, and brothers respond with gifts. The tilak time it gives is in the afternoon (Aparahna), while the Dwitiya tithi is running. Dwitiya spans two days this year, so the day your local panchang picks depends on your clock.

Drik Panchang's Leicester page also lists Tuesday 10 November. In every city above, the day Drik lists is the one on which Dwitiya covers the whole afternoon tilak window.

In New York, Los Angeles, Toronto and London, Dwitiya has ended before Wednesday afternoon. In Dubai and Doha it ends during Wednesday afternoon but covers all of Tuesday's. In Delhi, Drik's tilak window is 1:10 to 3:20 pm and Dwitiya begins at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, so it covers only the last hour and 20 minutes of Tuesday's window but all of Wednesday's.

In Singapore and Sydney it covers all of Wednesday's and little or none of Tuesday's. Choose your own city on Drik Panchang, and ask your family priest if the family is spread across countries.

Ship-by dates for a Bhai Dooj gift

Your brother's day is Wednesday 11 November, so aim to have the gift arrive by Monday 9 November, clear of both possible days. Business days exclude weekends, and customs holds can add more. We found no Bhai Dooj cut-off on the carriers' pages or the IGP and FNP home pages, so we count back from published delivery times.

RoutePublished timeLatest start for arrival by Mon 9 Nov

US Postal Service, Priority Mail International6 to 10 business days for many major markets, with customs delays extra (usps.com)Post by Mon 26 Oct
Canada Post, Xpresspost, from the Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver processing facility to India10 to 11 business days from the facility, plus 0 to 6 extra business days for your postcode area (canadapost.ca)Post by Fri 23 Oct if no extra days apply; Mon 19 Oct with 4 extra days
Canada Post, Tracked Packet, from the same facilities11 to 12 business days from the facility, plus the same extra business days (canadapost.ca)Post by Thu 22 Oct if no extra days apply; Fri 16 Oct with 4 extra days

Treat those as last dates, not targets. Canada Post counts its days from the processing facility (Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver) that handles your postcode, not from your own city, and says to add extra business days for that facility for both Xpresspost and Tracked Packet.

Its tables give 0, 1, 2, 4 or 6 extra days for Montreal and 0, 1 or 4 for Toronto and Vancouver, so look yours up on Canada Post's delivery standards pages. We use the same method for both services: the first date assumes no extra days, the second assumes 4, and each further extra day moves the date one business day earlier.

We could not open Royal Mail's India page, so we quote no UK figure; check your own carrier. IGP's home page says same-day delivery is available in over 400 cities, and gifting sites generally show availability by product, pincode and order cut-off time. Enter your brother's pincode first.

What to buy: six gifts for a brother in India

Every item below can be ordered in India for local delivery, so nothing has to clear customs.

Tilak and thali kit

A ready kit saves him hunting for small items on the day. Check what is in the box (diya, katori, rice and roli containers) and the size of the thali. Add a note so it feels like a gift, not a delivery.

Sweets box

Sweets are part of the day whatever else you give. Choose sweets he likes, and check the best-before date and whether the box needs a fridge.

Dry fruit hamper

Works for the gym-goer and the sweet-toothed alike. Check the net weight and packing date, and the nut list if he has an allergy.

Grooming kit

A safe pick for a brother who cares about his appearance. Check what is inside (trimmer, oil, comb, balm), the skin type it suits and the expiry date.

Wallet and belt set

Useful, easy to wrap and easy to size. Check the material description and the number of card slots, and whether it suits how he carries things.

Personalised photo frame

A childhood picture of the two of you does the job. Personalised items take longer to make, so order first and read the delivery date before you pay.

What customs does to a gift sent by post

Mumbai Customs Zone-I says gifts imported by post or courier are prohibited, except life-saving drugs and medicines and Rakhi, and can be cleared only if full duty is paid. The only festival item named is Rakhi (Chennai Customs adds that gifts related to Rakhi are not covered). Bhai Dooj and Diwali gifts are not named.

The Mumbai Foreign Post Office (postal) FAQ gives 30.98 percent of the CIF value, which includes postage, so a gift declared at ₹2,000 and sent by post would carry about ₹619.60 in duty, plus India Post's ₹100 delivery charge for a parcel.

That is our arithmetic. Duty on gifts depends on the route (post or courier) and the declared value, and an older Chennai courier FAQ gave 53.6 percent. Ask the carrier for the exact landed cost before you send. Our Diwali gifts to India from abroad guide has every rule and source.

Do not post sweets, medicines, cash or jewellery. Australia Post bans food and all medications on its courier service to India, the US Postal Service lists jewellery, gold and silver articles and currency as prohibited, and we found no Indian rule exempting gift sweets. Order those in India.

What goes on a tilak thali

Drik Panchang says sisters prepare a decorated puja thali, apply the tilak, tie a sacred thread on the brother's wrist and perform aarti, then offer sweets and a meal. Other guides list roli (kumkum), whole rice (akshat), a diya, sweets and flowers for the thali, and some add a coconut, betel leaves and nuts.

The order of tilak and aarti differs between families, so follow yours. If you fast on the day, people with diabetes, pregnancy or any medical condition should check with their doctor first.

How to organise a video-call tilak

The sister abroad and the brother in India can share the day by video, but the clocks work against you. A 2 pm tilak in Delhi on Wednesday 11 November is 8:30 am in London, 12:30 pm in Dubai, 4:30 pm in Singapore and 7:30 pm in Sydney.

It is 3:30 am in New York and Toronto and 12:30 am in Los Angeles, which is a lot to ask of anyone's smile. US and Canadian clocks go back on 1 November, so those times are standard time.

  1. Agree the date first. It may be Tuesday for you and Wednesday for him. Ask your priest whose panchang the family follows.
  2. Pick a time. Either join his afternoon, which may mean an early-hours call, or keep your own city's day and ask him to join. Check each city's tilak time on Drik Panchang.
  3. Send the kit ahead. Order a thali set and sweets in India, delivered to his door, with a note. Do not post it from abroad.
  4. Ask someone at his end to set the thali and hold the camera.
  5. Test the call the day before: light, sound and a charged phone.

Whether a video tilak suits your family is a question for your elders and priest, so ask early. The call is also a good moment for the sweets and the gift reveal, and that part is easy to do from anywhere.

Yes, but customs treat gifts by post or courier as prohibited unless full duty is paid, and the duty depends on the route and the declared value. The Mumbai postal FAQ gives 30.98 percent, and an older Chennai courier FAQ gave 53.6 percent, so ask the carrier for the exact landed cost. Rakhi is excepted, Bhai Dooj is not.

We would not. Australia Post bans food on its courier service to India, and the US Postal Service limits edibles to airmail. Order sweets in India for local delivery.

Agree the date, pick a time that suits both clocks, send a thali kit to his home through an Indian store and do the tilak by video call. Ask your priest if your family wants a particular way.

Your next step: check your city on Drik Panchang tonight, agree the day with your brother, and order his gift for local delivery. For ideas, see our Bhai Dooj gift for brother and Bhai Dooj gift for sister guides, and the full customs rules in Diwali gifts to India from abroad.
