Facebook is rolling out a brand new feature called “Profile Picture Guard” initially for users in India. Here’s how it will look like when you activate it!
In a recent article published by Facebook, it said it came up with this feature after the company’s research found that many women in India didn’t want share profile pictures with their original faces because they were concerned they might be misused.
That little shield icon is meant to stop people from abusing your profile picture in the following ways, according to FB:
Other people will no longer be able to download, share or send your profile picture in a message on Facebook
People you’re not friends with on Facebook won’t be able to tag anyone, including themselves, in your profile picture
Where possible, we’ll prevent others from taking a screenshot of your profile picture on Facebook, which is currently available only on Android devices
We’ll display a blue border and shield around your profile picture as a visual cue of protection
However it is found that some people were able to take screenshots of profile pictures, blue shield be damned totally. Facebook claims that the feature was rolling out the feature in phases, and that it should work for everyone in India within a few weeks.
Facebook also allows you to upload pictures overlaid with designs. More than 75% don’t copy or misuse such photos.
However this is now going to stop persistent stalkers in any way. They will still find ways to get your picture using Mobile Browsers or Desktops.
