Kidney Transplant By A Robot Gives Mumbai Man A New Life!

Kidney Transplant

A resident of Andheri, Mumbai of 59 years of age is the city’s 1st patient to go through a kidney transplant that was carried out with the support of a robot. The robot’s accuracy destined that the transplant was carried out with smaller number of muscle cuts, robotically causing lesser pain and blood loss along with quicker healing.

C N Murlidharan, the patient of renal breakdown, made up his mind for the transplant after being on dialysis for around one and a half year. His wife Leena, who is 55 years of age appeared to be just the right match. The transplant surgery took place on Sunday at H N Reliance Foundation Hospital in Charni Road after the couple had satisfactorily researched on the exercise of robotic technology for transplants.

“To my surprise, the robotic surgery involved much less pain,” he said. Murlidharan will be discharged from the hospital in a week’s time while his wife Leena will be discharged on Wednesday. With this, Mumbai has united with Ahmedabad, Delhi and Bangalore where robotically-assisted transplants are successfully being taken place since 3 to 4 years. Almost 300 robotically-assisted events have been carried out in the country till now.

Dr Inderbir Gill, a US-based robotic urology surgeon performed the transplant along with a team of doctors from Harkisondas hospital, said the major gain of the surgery is that the tolerant does not receive a kidney through a big muscle cutting scratch. “Robotic surgery for kidney transplantation is carried out in few centres in the world.”
